Never owned a microwave popper like this before and am always wary when I see an over-kill of 5 star reviews (which a saw on the "best seller" popper...After looking more at the critical reviews I ended up looking at this one & trusted them more, but still was expecting that disappointment I get too often on here these days after being faked out by reviews. Unfortunate that is getting worse rather than better lately.
I've made several batches now and found the following instructions & proportions to work the best:
1 TABLEspoon coconut oil (or butter flavored coconut oil, though flavored prob. not necessary if using Flavacol butter-flavored salt that the theatres use)
+ 1/2 teaspoon Flavacol (up to NO MORE than 3/4 teaspoon if you like VERY salty) --PS 1 Flavacol carton will last FOREVER for the average user, it takes very little.
put both in the popper & heat to melted in the microwave (mine is appox 30-40 seconds)
Then add 1/3 cup popcorn kernels for 2 people that want quite a bit (I used "Jolly Time American's Best Select Premium Yellow Pop Corn" and it tastes GREAT). This amt fills it to top
Place cover on (handle up & note it goes down a bit into the bowl before popping) & for my 1100 watt microwave I use the popcorn setting + "add 30 seconds" button --obviously stop it if popping stops before that.
Be careful when taking it out (though I didn't find it to be particularly scalding but it is VERY HOT but I still eat directly from the popper bowl).
I only had leftover kernels the first use because I was scared to let it go the whole time, but with the settings above you should be good...The beauty of this thing is if you DO have kernels left after you've eaten the rest, just pop it back into the microwave & pop them. I haven't had any leftover since I perfected the time/amounts above.
Also, you can run it totally dry (for you health freaks afraid of some movie theatre flavor, lol).
I love how every single kernal pops up from the oil mix already with yellow oil/Flavacol coloring & flavoring it.
Pretty shocked at how well and easy it cleans because I thought FOR SURE the oil would cause pitting and/or stains, but it cleans up like new, with the slight exception of the bottom ring of the lid which holds on to a bit of yellow.
Enter this marvelous product!
It arrived today and I quickly washed it so I could try it out. I know there's a learning curve on the best process for your microwave, so I opted to start with some olive oil and salt and some old Amish popcorn that's been in my fridge for at least two years. I used the popcorn button and waited to see what would happen. The popcorn popped. I took it out and immediately took off the lid and tossed it around to coat the kernels. Imagine my surprise when it was DELICIOUS!!
We ate it up as is (it didn't even need butter) and I stuck it back in to pop the unpopped kernels that were left. They were even better because they got a little nutty flavor by being cooked twice. There were two kernels left and it didn't burn at all.
The only bad thing I can say about this marvel is that it was smaller than I was expecting. But we're just going to order two more and make them individually for each family member. 😁
Addendum, after reading some negative reviews of this product: Performance will probably vary, depending upon the wattage of your microwave. Ours is 1100 watts, and I've found that 1 minute, 50 seconds is the optimal amount of time needed. Even 10 seconds more results in burned popcorn. Less means more unpopped kernels. To avoid the horribly burned popcorn with the attendant noxious odor, some experimentation, starting at the 90-second mark and increasing in 10-second increments, may be necessary. (Edit- Reducing the effective microwave wattage by cooking at a lower power level, as noted below, is probably the method to use for optimal results.) As with all microwave popcorn cookers, including the plastic-lined bags, whether the microwave has been recently used also matters, because the rotating glass plate may already be quite hot. I would advise placing the popper on a room temperature plate in the microwave prior to popping, in that case.
Addendum P.S.: To ensure that the popcorn doesn't burn and that more kernels are popped, the seller recommends that only 80% of full power be used in microwaves of 1000 watts or more.
Update: I found that even 80% power was too high for my microwave to pop an acceptable percentage of the kernels without burning, so I reduced the power to 70%, starting with a room temperature microwave and with the timer set to 3 minutes. The results were much better. Each reduction in power requires more time, most noticeably prior to the first kernel popping. Because of the pauses in microwave radiation inherent in cooking at less than full power, the general bagged microwave popcorn rule of stopping when you hear popping only every second or so cannot be relied upon. A trial-and-error process to determine the optimal power level and cooking time for your microwave will probably be necessary.
Final Update: We've had a couple of these for a while now, and they are still like new. The only complaint that I have is that when the bowl is washed (upside down) in the dishwasher, its bottom retains a lot of liquid. We are thinking of making some holes in the base, so that the liquid can drain out. Would advise wiping any residual oil out of the bowl and the lid before placing it in the machine, so that it and the other dishes don't come out smelling like oil. One thing that we've (duh) realized is that we can just use the popcorn button on our microwave to get perfect popcorn every time, without any power adjustment, just as we could with the bagged microwave popcorn.

OK, so I really expected this microwave popcorn bowl to suck. I've been using air poppers for years. I purchased a new air popper a few months ago, but it constantly overheats and shuts off before the end of a cycle. I received the Colonel Popper in the mail today. I was excited to see how well it worked based upon all of the positive reviews. So I washed it, did the "squeeze test" (which proves it is 100% silicone) and then followed the instructions to make my first batch of popcorn. I started with 1/4 cup popcorn. My microwave is 950 watts, so I set it to level 8 and 3:30 seconds. Lo and behold, I had a beautiful bowl of popcorn that tasted great. The difference between microwave popcorn and air popped popcorn is that with air poppers the kernels are often chewy or hard. Microwave popcorn is light and fluffy since it cooks the kernel from within. I was extremely impressed with the results and can't wait to make a full bowl of popcorn tonight for the family. Thanks for a quality item -- i will definitely be purchasing a spare :)
Very easy to use and clean. It says that it is dishwasher safe but from my experience never put anything made of silicone in the dishwasher unless you like your food to taste like soap. hand wash, it's fast and easy.
I find the included instructions to be correct, I have a 1200W micrwave and I do have to lower to power to 8. Otherwise the popcorn will burn. Power 8 and about 3:10. I do still have about 12 unpopped kernel but that is ok. If I leave it more then that it will start to burn.
I put a table spoon of cold butter at the bottom, put the lid and microwave 30 seconds.
Put half a cup of kernels, add very fine salt and pepper (make you grind it very very fine). stir the kernels to coat them.
Place the lid back on and microwave like I said.
Easy and fast, popcorn is crisp and taste buttery enough that I don't have to add more (unless I feel like eating decadent popcorn but for everyday it is good enough).
The only thing to be conscious about is the height of your microwave interior.
Mine is not high enough, the bowl fits just fine but when the kernels are fully popped I can't get it out. I have to push the lid out on the bottom of the microwave and about 3 hand-full of pop corn, then I remove the Colonel Popper, transfer to another bowl (because that one is super hot) and proceed to collect what fell at the bottom of the microwave. Not a big deal.
Overall I would say that it is perfect. It gives me a tasty popcorn just like my old cuisinart machine (the one with the metal arm that spin on a heat plate). It is a lot easier to clean, takes less space, does not require an electric outlet (I don't know for you but mines are pretty full with the google home, dyson, mini oven, cell chargers, battery chargers...) and it is way faster.
Hot air machines are noisy and don't produce a good tasting popcorn on its own, you have to add butter afterward and it makes your hand greasy which is not always something you want. When the kernel burst while surrounded by butter the "meat" merges with it and so makes it tasty without the greasy fingers.
Very happy with this purchase.
Popcorn is cheap don't hesitate to experiment power levels and time and adjust for your microwave.
